260MC – Treatment

The camera moves along the bath until we see a bloody hand (with something specific like a ring or a scar) at which point the camera stops and focuses on it for a few seconds. The screen goes black and the story starts. This way we start the film off with the ending and then explain the rest of the story.

(sound of water dripping slowly as the camera pans across to his hand)

Main character is a teenager struggling with his homosexuality. He feels isolated as if he doesn’t fit in and feels like people treat him differently. The soundtrack throughout the film will be our main character reading his goodbye letter addressed to his family and friends. Through the letter we start to understand the real reason behind his isolation and depression.

The story starts with our main character lying in bed staring at the ceiling. At this point the letter starts off.

John is on his phone texting someone called Ethan. The text is intimate and possibly a bit sexual which implies that John might be having a very close relationship with this person.

John is having his lunch while everyone talks around him. He sits by himself quietly and is the only character in focus in this specific shot in order to show his isolation.

John is in school and the yearbook pictures are being taken. He sits down all upset with a blurred out queue in the background. His face is bruised and the camera looks at him from the photographer’s perspective. At this point the letter could be talking about how he feels unseen and ignored. John is talking to a guy in a public place. This person could be John’s love interest. It looks like they’re having an argument and the guy walks off leaving John by himself, looking miserable and upset. (A Long shot or an establishing shot)

John is looking at himself in the mirror while brushing his teeth. He then starts touching his face as if to imply that he doesn’t feel comfortable in his skin or doesn’t feel like he fits in. (Close up) The final scene will show our main character actually finishing writing his letter at which point we see his hand and realise it was him in the bath. He then gets up off his chair and reveals the painting behind him on the wall.

261MC – Group Treatment

Scene 1 (Introduction)

Begins with a bird’s eye city view, and the sound effects of police sirens and the ear ringing sound. Fades into a medium shot of Aj shadow as he starts to narrate the events of that night, then montage of shots of a fast moving car, with a blurred affect.

Scene 2 (conflict)

A range of shots is used for the interview scene predominately medium shots and close up shots. Interview with Aj (medium shot) fades over the shadow on the wall. As Aj is explaining this event some extreme close ups of his eyes and hands are used to connote emotion. The camera then brings us to a lively scene where everyone appears to be drinking, smoking and listening to music. Cutting back to interview shot where he continues to explain the story. Taking the audience back to when the crash happen the camera brings us inside a vehicle with Aj and his friends inside the vehicle a montage of close up shots of hands on the wheel, facial expressions as a means of a build up to the accident. The sound of a car screeching and coming to collide with another appears and the next shot we see is a blackout. Sound effects of police and ambulance sirens emerge along with the sound effect of the police radio. Cuts back to Aj looking over a balcony cutting to an Ariel night view of Coventry fast forwarding to day.

Scene 3 (necessity):

From an Ariel viewpoint we then have another shot of the scenery in a quieter surrounding looking down at the roads. The voiceover of Aj still remains when two pictures of his friends appear as he explains their injuries and the consequences he had to face for this crime.

Scene 4:

Extreme, long shot showing Aj pondering on his thoughts as he walks down the road. Finally ending with location shots and Iconic shots of alcohol and drug abuse.

261MC- Visual Essay

My essay film consists of a variety of images, some mine and some from the internet. I want the visuals for the documentary to be striking and eye catching to my viewers. These images are just snippets of what i want to involve in my documentary.

Documentary Modes

Researching into different documentary modes, gave me more of an insight and structure to follow and practise to produce high quality work.

The Expository Mode (Voice of God)

The predominant purpose of the expository mode is to make an argument. It emphasises verbal commentary – often using a narrator. Narration is a distinct innovation of the expositional mode of documentary. With consistent narration as it holds the weight of explaining and arguing the film makers content as it addresses the audience directly.

“…illustrate, illuminate, evoke, or act in counterpoint to what is said…[we] take our cue from the commentary and understand the images as evidence or demonstration…” (Nichols 2001: 107)

Pictures and visuals are used as evidence to support the commentary, but the commentary is the most important element of expository mode of documentary.

The Poetic Mode

This mode, explores the more abstract approach to documentary film makin. It does’nt portray the typical narrative structure. The series of evnts are under-developed and situations can be left unsolved. The poetic element also

The Reflective Mode

This mode, which includes the mockumentary format. This particular mode of documentary borrows techniques from fiction film for an emotional subjective response.

The Performative Mode

The performative mode is abit different but are invloved in many documentaries such as MTV’s new catfish where you see the documentary-maker (and crew) interact with the subject. The narrative is often shaped as an investigation search, possibly without a satisfactory conclusion. The audience often seem ot be addressed in an emotional and direct way. The subject of perfomative docuemntary draws upon the concerns of identity (gender, sexuality), rather than factual topics.

The Paticipatory Mode (Interactive)

Simialr to the performative mode, the documentary maker (and crew) interacts with the subject. Interviews dominate but tend to be informal to keep the audience engaged. Hand-held camera is a huge factor when it comes to participtorry as it sets it part from the other modes.

Others..

  • Documentary-maker is visble to the audience – intervenes and partcipates in action
  • Voiceover, usualy by the documentary maker
  • Synchronous (direct) sound recodring

Observational Conventions

Inlcuding simlar elelments to particpatory mode, location shooting using hand-held camers. Thier are no interviews, no voicers, the documentary-makers presence is hidden as well as the subject pretending that theyy are not being filmed. In a conclusion obersvational mode portrays realsim and is shown in it’s purest form.

In conclusion, researching throughloloy into the codes and conventions of these different modes had made want to go down the route of expository as I think the use of a voice over along with visual and images all compliement each other.

Francis Bacon

In order to undertsand ur photo more which is very important tin order to produce high quality work with a strong narrative background research is important.

Francis Bacon (28th October 1909 – 28 April 1992) was an Irish-born british figurative painter whom was known for his ”bold, emotionally charged and raw imagery”. Bacon has produced some of the most iconic images of wounded and traumatized humanity in post-war. He is known for givng a ”visual shock” through his images, it was described in the Time (Oct 19, 1953) as a ”chambers of horros” filled with paintings that are”snapshots from hell’ told Melvyn Bragg. Borrowing inspiration from surrealism, film photgrpahy and the old masters. The old masters were an important source of inspiration for him, particulary Diego Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X which Bacon used in our image for his most famous series of ”screaming popes”.

Key elements of Bacons paintings

Bacon identified three fundamental elements in his paintings – material, structure, the round ontour and the raised iamges or figures.

  • The round contour
  • The material structure
  • The figure

–   The figures in his painting have a representative purpose. They bring an element of narration in to the painting or derve an illustrative purpose. He has a unique style of using forms, he doesnt use forms as illustartion or narration pieces. There is a disortation of the form with intention of showing the ‘sensation’ rather than the figure, so he described a figuartive painter. Bacon paints sensations which a resonate with the viewer at a phsyical level.

Conclusion

The conventions of Bacon’s paintings is based on the human body. He manipulated the known semantics of the human body to create sensation. The physical body was the language he spoke through his paintings. He expresses profound sympathy through what it seems to be grotesque fisgures. The re-arrangement of the body parts creates visveral sensation and this senation wa Bacon ultimate objective in all his paintings.

HEAD VI

Head_VI_(1949)

For this module, we are given a photograph or a painting at random to then create a cinematic responce, with a narrative. The painting (above) was the painting that was chosen for my group. It was very interesting to look at on a first glance as we started decoding the image to see what it’s codes and convention could possibly represent without indentifying the artist and before having any sort of background knowledge of the photo. This helped us see the picture in our prespective and how we could create a cinematic response to this without seeing it through the artist eyes (as yet). The specfic colours like the yellow and purple really stood out to us. We thought the yellow dashes along the page where replicatioin of light beaming down almost and blend with the signifcant scream which the most important element of this painting.

261MC – Visual Narrative

This project helped me determine what cinematic styles and techniques I wished to use for the filming of my documentary. Unfortunately, due to not being able to go with my initial Idea I was stuck on what I could possibly do for my visual Narrative. However we decided to get some location shots, and practising with the drome we travelled to Liecster to get more a city view.

Overall it was definatley worth going out and getting some practise shot otherwise coming to the filming date we wouldnt have gathered that shots that we got going out initally as the weather was bad on the filiming dates.

My visual narrative doesnt contain narrative as my subject was will be creating as voiceover as he was very nervous in front of the camera.
